Dr. Peter A. Vellis is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon providing advanced surgical care for patients in Billerica, Westford, and Worcester, MA. Known for his military service, surgical expertise, and dedication to education, Dr. Vellis brings a calm, confident presence to every procedure he performs.
Academic Background and Naval Service
Dr. Vellis was raised in Brooklyn, NY, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology, graduating Summa Cum Laude from Adelphi University in 1996. He then went on to receive his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 2000.
Upon graduation, Dr. Vellis was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy Dental Corps. His early service included a General Practice Residency at Great Lakes Naval Hospital in Illinois, followed by a two-year deployment as Dental Department Head aboard the USS Detroit in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Advanced Surgical Training and Naval Leadership
Dr. Vellis was selected by the Navy for advanced training and completed a rigorous oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the University of Minnesota in 2007. He then returned to active duty as the lead oral surgeon aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, supporting deployed military operations.In 2009, he was appointed Department Head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Navy’s largest dental clinic in Norfolk, VA. He also served as a clinical instructor at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, training future oral surgeons.Before his honorable discharge, Dr. Vellis was promoted to the rank of Commander.
