Tooth Extractions in Billerica, Westford & Worcester, MA

When a tooth becomes too damaged or decayed to save, extraction may be the best option to preserve your oral health. At New England Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, our board-certified surgeons perform tooth extractions with a focus on comfort, precision, and long-term function. We serve patients throughout Billerica, Westford, and Worcester, MA, and work closely with referring dentists and orthodontists to ensure the best possible outcome.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Needed?

While dentists strive to save natural teeth whenever possible, there are cases where extraction is necessary, such as:

  • Severe tooth decay or infection
  • Advanced periodontal (gum) disease
  • Cracked or broken teeth below the gumline
  • Impacted or non-erupting teeth
  • Preparation for dentures or Orthodontic Treatment
  • Overcrowding or tooth misalignment
  • Non-restorable teeth following trauma

If your general dentist has recommended removal, or you are experiencing persistent dental pain, we can evaluate your case and discuss all available options.

Simple vs. Surgical Tooth Extractions

There are two primary types of extractions:

Simple Extraction

Used when the tooth is fully erupted and accessible. The tooth is gently loosened and removed with specialized instruments under local anesthesia.

Surgical Extraction

Required for impacted, broken, or partially erupted teeth. This procedure may involve incising the gum and removing bone or sectioning the tooth. Surgical extractions are commonly performed for Wisdom Teeth or other difficult cases.

Our surgeons are trained in both approaches and will select the appropriate method based on your tooth’s condition, location, and root structure.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Your comfort is our priority. We offer a range of Anesthesia Options, from local anesthesia to IV sedation or general anesthesia, depending on your needs and medical history.

During your extraction:

  • The area is numbed or sedated
  • The tooth is gently loosened and removed
  • The socket is cleaned and sutured if necessary
  • Post-operative instructions are provided for proper healing

If a dental implant is part of your long-term plan, we may also recommend Socket Preservation to maintain bone volume after the extraction.

Recovery and Aftercare

Healing times vary depending on the complexity of the procedure. Most patients can return to light activities the following day, with full healing expected over 1–2 weeks.

Common recovery tips include:

  • Using cold compresses to minimize swelling
  • Taking medications as prescribed
  • Eating soft foods and avoiding straws
  • Keeping the extraction site clean

Detailed instructions are available on our After Tooth Extraction page.

Pediatric and Teen Extractions

We also offer tooth extractions for Pediatric Patients, including removal of baby teeth that fail to fall out naturally or extractions in preparation for braces. Our team uses special protocols and child-friendly communication to keep younger patients calm and safe.

Is tooth extraction painful?

No. With local anesthesia or sedation, you will not feel pain during the procedure. Mild discomfort after the extraction is expected and can be managed with medication.

How long does it take to recover?

Most patients recover within one week. Surgical extractions may require more time depending on the complexity. Follow our post-op instructions for a smooth recovery.

What are dry sockets?

A dry socket occurs when the blood clot in the extraction site becomes dislodged. It can delay healing and cause pain. Avoid smoking, drinking through a straw, or vigorous rinsing for at least 72 hours after surgery.

Can I get an implant after a tooth extraction?

Yes. We offer Dental Implants to permanently replace extracted teeth. In many cases, we place a bone graft at the time of extraction to prepare for future implant placement.

Will I need stitches?

Some surgical extractions require stitches to close the gum tissue. These are typically dissolvable and do not need to be removed.
